The photogrpahs of people with cancer

Nancy Borowick (1985)

When both her parents were diagnosed with cancer, Borowick wanted to spend as much time with them as it was possible. She was taking photos of them so she could remember all the memories; good or bad.

She was with them almost all the time. That way they stopped noticing her taking photos. Therefore she was able to capture their honest life and reactions, and their battle with cancer.

When editing photos Borowick learned about their parents as husband and wife. She learned about their relationship and ways in which they were supporting each other.

The photographs are very moving. Some of them keep everything in focus, such as the ones in the hospital room to show where they both are and what is happening to them. Other ones have a low depth of field, so we only focus on the subject. The photograph of them cuddling is one of them. It feels very personal, very intimate. It shows their love, hope, fear and anger. It is incredibly strong image.

I like that Borowick took white and black photographs. The lack of color helps with focusing on what is actually happening in the frame. The anger, sadness, love, laughter. It makes the images more real, honest, more rough.
